How does taking Levaquin, Avelox, Cipro cause Aortic aneurysms or dissections

Levaquin, Avelox and Cipro are fluoroquinolones which can degrade collagen in tissues and cause tendon ruptures and retinal detachments. Studies show that Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin can also cause aortic aneurysm and dissections, as the antibiotics degrade the collagen in that the aorta as well. The aorta is the main artery, traveling from the heart to the abdomen. An aortic aneurysm occurs when the artery wall weakens, resulting in the weakened area to bulge and burst which can ultimately result in death.

The manufacturers knew or should have known of these risks, yet warnings were not provided.

Studies Show Increased Risks

In October 2015, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine highlighted the link between Cipro, Avelox, Levaquin and aortic aneurysm. The researchers found that users may face a two-fold increased risk of aortic aneurysm or dissection.

A follow up study in the medical journal The BMJ in March 2018, concluding that fluoroquinolones were associated with an increased risk of acute aortic disease, and aortic aneurysm.

The Drug Manufactures Failed to Warn about Aortic Aneurysm

As a result of the failure to warn, patients and doctors could not make informed decisions about whether to use the antibiotics. Aneurysms can burst, which if it does not occur in the hospital, is usually fatal.

Symptoms of aortic aneurysms prior to death from using Levaquin, Avelox or Cipro include:

  • Chest and Back Pain
